Errani and Vavassori Clinch US Open Mixed Doubles Title in Thrilling Final

Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori demonstrated their mixed doubles dominance at the US Open, securing their second consecutive title in a thrilling final against Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud. The Italian duo, entering the competition via a wild card, leveraged their experience to overcome the Polish-Norwegian pair in a match that ended 6-3, 5-7, 10-6.

The reimagined format of this year's mixed doubles event, prioritizing singles rankings, attracted a star-studded field and generated significant buzz.

A Winning Combination

Vavassori sealed the victory with a powerful forehand, prompting a jubilant celebration as he lifted Errani in the air. Their triumph earned them a $1 million prize. "We've achieved something amazing over the past two years," Vavassori remarked, highlighting the growing appeal of doubles tennis.

Early Lead and a Fight Back

Swiatek and Ruud, playing together for the first time, initially struggled against the seasoned Italians, falling behind 3-0 in the first set. While Swiatek managed a break, a subsequent double fault hampered their momentum, allowing Errani and Vavassori to secure the first set.

The Italians gained another break in the seventh game of the second set, but Swiatek and Ruud fought back, breaking in the tenth and ultimately leveling the match with a backhand winner from Swiatek in the twelfth.

Errani and Vavassori then surged to a 4-0 lead in the tiebreak, capitalizing on a crucial double fault from Swiatek to clinch the championship.

Competitive Spirit

"We pushed until the end," Swiatek stated, acknowledging their effort to make the match competitive.

A Novel Format and Mixed Reactions

The US Open experimented with a new format for the mixed doubles, scheduling it before the main singles draw. The event featured eight teams based on combined singles rankings and eight wild card entries.

Despite attracting big names like Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic and drawing large crowds, the format drew criticism from some who felt it disadvantaged veteran doubles specialists.

The large attendance figures indicated the marketing strategy worked well, with many fans lining up in the rain well in advance of the semi-final matches.

"Playing in front of such a large crowd is incredible," Errani noted, dedicating the win to doubles players who were unable to participate due to the format change.
