Raducanu's Eastbourne Campaign Ends in Second Round Heartbreak

Emma Raducanu's hopes for a strong showing at Eastbourne were dashed in a grueling second-round match against Australian Maya Joint. Despite a valiant comeback effort, Raducanu ultimately fell short, losing in a final-set tiebreak.
The British number one faced an uphill battle for much of the deciding set, trailing Joint 5-2. However, displaying remarkable resilience, Raducanu mounted an impressive fightback, breaking Joint's serve three times to force a tiebreak.
Raducanu even grabbed an early mini-break in the tiebreak, leading 4-3, but Joint, demonstrating composure beyond her years, rattled off four consecutive points to secure the victory 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (4) and advance to the quarter-finals.
Raducanu had revealed earlier in the week that she was dealing with difficult personal news, which may have contributed to her subdued demeanor and apparent fatigue in the latter stages of the match. She will now focus on preparing for Wimbledon, the tournament where she famously achieved Grand Slam glory in 2021.
After losing the initial two games, Raducanu initially appeared in control, taking the first set 6-4 thanks to two well-timed breaks. However, Joint, currently ranked 51st globally, found her rhythm, winning 11 of the subsequent 14 games and placing Raducanu on the brink of elimination.
Spotting Joint's nervousness as she served for the match, Raducanu seized the opportunity to break back. A subsequent hold of serve leveled the score at 5-5. The seesaw battle continued, with Joint regrouping to break Raducanu and once again serve for the match at 6-5.
Raducanu dug deep to force the tie-break, but Joint ultimately prevailed, stringing together four decisive points and clinching the match with an ace.
Joint expressed her relief after the match, stating, "Today was really tough, there was a lot of ups and downs, I was happy I was able to tough it out at the end. I am really glad I was able to win this match."
In other news from Eastbourne, Jodie Burrage also experienced heartbreak, becoming the second British player in as many days to fail to convert match points against reigning Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova. Just one day after Harriet Dart's near miss, Burrage, ranked world number 161, held three match points at 6-5 in the deciding set but was unable to capitalize, with Krejcikova ultimately winning the tiebreak.
On the men's side, lucky loser Billy Harris continued his unexpected run, defeating Mattia Bellucci 6-3, 6-4.
