Alcaraz's Solo Win Can't Stop Team World's Momentum

Alcaraz's Solo Win Can't Stop Team World's Momentum

With just two more victories in the remaining games, Team World should easily win the Laver Cup for the third time in a row.

Team World led 8-4 going into the third and last day of competition in Berlin after winning three of the four matches they played against Team Europe on Saturday.

Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz defeated top-five opponents on Friday, while Ben Shelton and Alejandro Tabilo dominated Europe's Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas by scores of 6-1 and 6-2.

Carlos Alcaraz, who is known for his victories at the French Open and Wimbledon, secured Team Europe's sole win by defeating Shelton. With a break in each set, Alcaraz clinched a 6-4 victory. Notably, Alcaraz impressively saved all five break points he faced. It is worth mentioning that Shelton, in his fifth Laver Cup match, conceded his first set.

Tiafoe, who advanced to the U.S. Open semifinals, achieved a victory over No. 5 Daniil Medvedev 3-6, 6-4 (10-5), marking his first win in six previous matches against Medvedev.

"During the middle of the second set and in the tiebreak, I felt a remarkable resemblance to Roger Federer," Tiafoe jokingly remarked, casting a smile in Federer's direction, who happened to be present in the stands.

Taylor Fritz, currently ranked No. 7, won a match against No. 2-ranked Alexander Zverev, cementing his position as a formidable opponent. Fritz defeated the German player 6-4, 7-5 for the third time in a row. Fritz demonstrated great prowess, hitting an impressive 27 winners, while Zverev could only manage 11.

Shelton and Alejandro Tabilo won the doubles match easily, capping off the day's events.

The Laver Cup has a format similar to golf's Ryder Cup. The goal is for a team to score 13 points first to secure victory. On Sunday, there are four matches, each worth three points.
